When
someone dies at home or in a nursing home the first
contact should be the person's doctor who will normally
call at the place of death and if satisfied with the
cause of death will issue a Medical Certificate of cause
of death.
You may be
asked to call to collect this from the surgery. After
the doctor has attended you should contact your Funeral
Director to inform them accordingly.
If a death
occurs in hospital you will be seen by either the
nursing staff or in some cases a Bereavement Officer.
They will have arranged for a doctor to issue a Medical
Certificate of Cause of Death. You should if known at
this time, tell the hospital if cremation is to be the
type of funeral required. This will allow additional
documentation to be completed. You should then contact
your Funeral Director to inform them accordingly.
In some
case the death may be reported to the coroner. There are
a number of reasons why this might happen, and this
should not be a case for concern. In some circumstances
the documentation and procedure are somewhat different.
Please remember that the coroner and his officers are
working in your interest. Contact your Funeral Director
as soon as possible who will able to advise you on any
matter relating to the work of the coroner.
